Recognize a translation (slide), reflection (flip) or rotation (turn) of a simple two-dimensional figure

Did You Know?
You can describe a motion used to move a plane figure as a translation (slide),
reflection (flip) or rotation (turn). The motion
does not change the
size or shape of the figure. It only results in a change of location.
Check What You Know First
Look at the figures below and write the following answers: translation,
reflection or rotation. Remember a translation
is a slide, a reflection
is a flip and a rotation is a turn.

Key Vocabulary
Transformation - The movement of a figure by a translation (slide), reflection (flip) or rotation (turn).
Translation (Slide) -
A
movement of a figure to a new position without turning or flipping it.
Reflection (Flip) -
A
movement of a figure to a new position by flipping the figure over a line.
Rotation (Turn) -
A
movement of a figure to a new position by rotating the figure around a point.
Learn About It Now
A transformation is the movement of a figure by a translation (slide), reflection (flip) or rotation (turn).
Let’s look at the figures below to see what that means.

A translation (slide) is
a movement of a figure to a new position without turning or flipping it. The
following figures are
examples of translations (slides), which were numbers 3 and 5 in the problems
you did.

A reflection (flip) is a movement of a figure
to a new position by flipping the figure over a line. The following figures
are examples
of reflections (flips), which were numbers 1 and 6 in the problems you did.

A rotation (turn) is a movement of a figure to a new position
by rotating the figure around a point. The following figures are
examples of
rotations (turns), which were numbers 2 and 4 in the problems you did.

Activity to Practice Making a Translation (Slide), Reflection (Flip) or Rotation (Turn)
Use pattern blocks to do this activity. Choose a pattern block
to show different ways to move the block.
Then select a different pattern
block and repeat the steps.
