The Adventures in Cuecok Woods

by Kaylyn

I am a pioneer. My name is Katie Sandersan. My friends and I went on a hike in the Cuecok Woods. My mom packed a lunch for us. We were all getting hungry so we stopped to eat the apples my mom packed us. We decided to walk up a mountain which we thought was Cuecok Mountain. Before we knew it, the sky was dark and the big, full moon was rising. We were LOST!! I've heard tales about when there is a full moon, a white wolf comes out to eat and hunt. I told my friends, Leesa and Hannah about the story. We all got scared. Wesley and Hannah were whining about how tired they were, so we stopped for the night. We gathered leaves and slept on them. When we got up in the morning, we found out that we were on top of Cheris Mountain, the biggest mountain in Spunkensville. We were frightened. Hannah and Sophie started to cry. Then Leesa did, too. Wesley was scared and did not know what to do. I thought we were going to die, but I said, "Wait a minute. Remember we are pioneers. Our parents taught us what to do in situations like this. I will get my compass and rope and we will try to get off the mountain. We will try to find our way home." I brought out my compass to find which direction to go. We wanted to go North so we did. We saw a swift river ahead. We found out that there was a calm place to cross the river. Now we had to go down rocky cliff sides. We estimated they were 50 feet down. I had a 75 foot long bull rope. I tied it around a sturdy tree and one at a time we repelled down my rope and got off the cliff. We walked and walked. We found footprints with a white hair ball in the print. I stopped to think what could have made the footprints. Suddenly, we saw a white figure run very fast through the woods on four legs. Everyone thought it was a ghost, except me. I had a funny feeling that it was the strange, white wolf. We walked until it became dark again. Hannah, Sophie, and Leesa got scared because they remembered the wolf tale. We found a cave. I lit my oil lamp. We put some leaves in the cave to make a bed and we slept there. When we awoke the next morning, Sophie screamed and ran out of the cave with Hannah, Leesa, Wesley and me running after her. She said she saw a snake but it was a snake skin. Later that day, we ate berries that were close by and the loaf of bread my mom made us. After that we moved on. Suddenly, we heard something behind us. We all turned around and saw the white wolf about four feet away from us. I told everyone not to move. Then the wolf yelped softly and walked slowly to us. I carefully grabbed a piece of bread out of my backpack and fed it to the wolf. Then the wolf rubbed against my leg like a cat. Everyone praised the wolf. The wolf followed us. We kept walking. FINALLY WE ARE HOME!!! We kept the wolf and told our parents all about our adventures.
