Being a Fox

by Kevin

I was born on April 23, 1998. This is the story of my life. I was a fox who was only a few days old. My eyes and ears won't open for two weeks. I lived underground with my parents. I slept most of the time. My parents fed me my favorite food which was rabbit. Finally I was old enough to leave my den. I saw some other foxes and we decided to play tag. Then we all played hide-and-seek. Some of the other foxes got lost unfortunately. A few months had gone by and my dad was taking me out hunting for the first time. We were only hunting small things that we normally ate such as mice. After a few tries, I had mastered the art of hunting. Father was very proud of me. It was now January. Winter had arrived and the storms had come along with it. It had gotten so cold that many animals were hibernating. In the winter, when I felt like it, I played outside. On one of the days that I felt up to it, I went outside to play. I saw a group of guys that my father had told me about. They were hunters who were looking for foxes. Before they noticed me, I was out of their path and headed home. Six months had passed and summer had arrived. One day it became so hot that my parents and I spent most of the day near a stream. My parents taught me how to swim. It was fun. Two years had gone by and I'm out on my own . It had been a tough year for me because my parents were no longer with me. Now I'm out trying to start my own family.
